Our Mission
The Department of Health Studies is dedicated to
improving the health of communities by conducting research, teaching
evidence-based practice, educating future health education/health promotion
professionals, and developing leaders and scholars who translate research into
practice. Through responsive, collaborative relationships with faculty, staff,
students, alumni, schools, and populations, the department's purpose is to
graduate professionals of high esteem who impact behavioral and social
determinates of societal health.
General Focus
The TWU Health Studies blog aims to publish each
week. We strive to inform, encourage, and assist the TWU Health Studies
students and community be successful students, savvy self-managers of their
careers, and thoughtful health leaders.
Our Readership
We are generally a weekly blog with average monthly
views of approximately 1,000. Although our blog is geared toward with the TWU
Health Studies community we find we have a variety of readers from health
enthusiasts to students at other universities to the broader Texas Woman’s
University community.
What to Pitch
Health Focus – These posts focus on one of the national health
observances. Upcoming months are listed on the editorial calendar. We encourage writers to use
professional sources and cite those.
Healthy Living – These posts are more open. They can be about
exercise, nutrition, meditation, just to name a few. It could be a personal
story on how someone lost weight or found better strategies to deal with
diabetes. We encourage writers to use professional sources and cite those.
Academic/Career Success Tips – These posts can be information on
how to study for a big exam, writing the perfect cover letter, choosing the
best graduate program, etc.
Professional, external sources are encouraged.
Showcase – These posts typically focus on a Health Studies student,
alum, faculty, staff, program, course, a grant, graduation, etc. They highlight
an achievement or elaborate on some aspect of HS. These are typically written by
the HS staff.
Spotlight – These posts may focus on
a specific person, department, or service, particularly at TWU. Occasionally,
they may focus on an external person, organization, or service that is relevant
to Health Studies.
Book Reviews – These posts may review a
book of interest to health educators, students, or those interested in health
more generally. Books might cover career management strategies, online
learning, or leadership. Some examples might include Healthy Eating Healthy World, Forks
Over Knives, The Start-up of You,
The Mentor Leader, and more.
Take a moment to look over our editorial calendar. We will allow links in your articles if they are relevant to the topic you are writing about. We ask that you include proper attribution. Linking to your blog or website is okay if it primarily focuses on health, health education, academic, or career development fields, and if it can be clearly ascertained that the blog or site is owned by you. You may link to your own site or sites to buy your book in your byline (see Post Author below).
We have no minimum length requirement, but prefer that posts be at least 200 words. Longer posts may be broken up by subheadings.
Post Author
We want to help promote you as the author of your article, and so we provide you the opportunity to include a byline. Post author may include an author bio up to 150 words and up to three links. You may also include an image. We recommend that at least one of the links from your byline should lead to a page where readers can learn more about you. Linking to your blog or website is okay if it primarily focuses on health, health education, academic, or career development fields, and if it can be clearly ascertained that the blog or site is owned by you.
Guest bloggers may link to their own content within the post when applicable, but this is subject to review.
By submitting your post(s), you acknowledge that your post(s) belong to TWU Health Studies and will be credited to the author. Also, by submission, you allow TWU Health Studies to share your comments publicly.
Review
TWU Health Studies reserves the right to review and edit for grammar. We regularly edit posts by our contributors and guest bloggers. We will not rewrite your article, but may make grammatical changes, minor edits, title changes, photo changes, and other changes. If a post needs improvement, we will return it to you with suggestions. Please do not be offended if we suggest changes.
No payment will be involved for guest blog content.
TWU Health Studies reserves the right to make links within an author’s text to other posts in TWU Health Studies (including department website and blog).
Publishing of the blog post will be done at the discretion of TWU Health Studies. After a post is approved, it may be a while before it is actually published.
TWU Health Studies reserves the right to decline publishing any post or to remove a post after it has been published.
Images
Images are great for garnering attention. TWU Health Studies may include one with your post. If you have an image in mind, please let the editors know and they will take it into consideration.
Overview

- The post must not include marketing-related links and must not be entirely self-promotional. This is why we include an author byline.
- Posts must be original and may not have been previously published elsewhere online

How should I submit content?
Content may be submitted via an attachment as a word document to modonnell @ twu.edu.
